Hello! This is my first post here. I have been reading the forum for help with firmware update tasks. Thanks for all the info!
Now for my current situation... I have 23 Dell PowerEdge M620 blade servers in a couple of different M1000e Chassis that are all on iDRAC7 1.46.45. I need to update the iDRAC firmware to the latest version. I do not see any upgrade notes in the latest release notes for version 2.21.21.21. My question is, can I update the iDRAC on these from 1.46.45 directly to 2.21.21.21? I understand that the 2.21.21.21 is packaged with the Life Controller firmware as well. Will updating require the server to restart? These are PROD servers and I need to be able to update the iDRAC's while they are running.
My other question is, what is the best way to actually apply these updates? I cannot use OME for these particular servers because they run a custom OS and we have not gotten them setup for OME yet. As a test, since I have not worked with updating firmware on a Dell server outside OME before, I tried testing a DUP on a CMC GUI for an M610 - I attempted to update the iDRAC from v3.3 to 3.65 and I got an error that the DUP could not be verified. I then tried to upload the firmimg.imc file I extracted from the package to the iDRAC on the M610 and then update the iDRAC firmware that way but it also said it could not be verified and failed... I'm not sure what the deal is. My concern with the prod servers is that both methods will fail like it did on the M610. From my understanding I should be able to log into the iDRAC on these M620 blades servers and update the iDRAC firmware with the firmimg.d7 file I extracted from the DUP. Is that true?
One more question... Is there any reason that the actual server would need a reboot if I attempt to push the 2.21.21.21 iDRAC firmware update either via the CMC or via the iDRAC itself?
Thanks in advance!
